Editor’s Note: Peter Chandler chose not to answer the questionnaire, but to respond as follows:

”As you may know there have been several questionnaires sent out to those seeking election and my response has been to respond to the questions raised via an update of the information on my website www.peterchandler.ca. In general I find yes/no questions can sometimes overlook other options that flow from consultation, sometimes options that may not have been considered when the questions were drafted.

Before I was elected to Council I too was involved in making my street more pedestrian friendly. In fact about ten years ago I attended a council meeting as a member of the community concerned that the District wanted to increase the speed limit on Birch Road from 30 to 50km/hr.  Mayor Michaluk and the Council listened to us and directed the staff to keep the speed limit at 30.

Being on Council for the last three years has shown that pedestrian safety is an ongoing concern. Barrett Drive in Dean Park, the traffic associated with Kelset school, and the cycle paths along East Saanich road are just a few of the issues that Council has addressed. I personally am very open to working directly with residents to improve the situation in their neighbourhood.

I believe as a community we must ensure the roads can be shared by vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians (and horses in the more rural areas) in a safe manner. Council and the neighbourhood should look into any and all ideas that can achieve this goal and work with the RCMP to implement them.

I am fortunate enough to be able to commute to work by bike (although not every day), and that I walk several times each week, mostly for dog walks.”
